Scientists from Masaryk University exhumed the remains of Johann Gregor Mendel from the tomb in June. They took DNA samples from the remains. They will perform genetic analysis and want to process his entire genome. Thanks to this, it will be possible to say what diseases he was prone to. "Nowadays, we are able to tell whether these people had an increased risk of thrombus formation, hypertension, celiac disease, or they had lactose intolerance," explained Omar Šerý, a geneticist at the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University in Brno.
"Almost the same can be read from the samples as would be read if we took blood from a living person," added Jiří Drábek, a forensic geneticist at the IMTM and the Medical Faculty of Palacký University in Olomouc.
