Mendel-Zirm Lecture Series: Carlos J. Camacho on Translating Cutting-edge Developments in Cancer Therapeutics Today: From structure-based to network approaches

We would like to invite you to the first Mendel-Zirm Lecture of this year! We are very pleased that assoc. prof. Carlos J. Camacho, Ph.D. from Department of Computational and Systems Biology, University of Pittsburgh accepted our invitation and will present his work on Translating Cutting-edge Developments in Cancer Therapeutics Today: From structure-based to network approaches.

 

Biography
Over the past three decades, Dr. Camacho has been a pioneering researcher in protein biophysics, leveraging his expertise to develop innovative therapeutics targeting previously "undruggable" entities. His work intertwines protein folding with molecular recognition and binding, culminating in the creation of the groundbreaking protein docking tool, "ClusPro." Additionally, he has significantly contributed to unraveling the intricacies of intrinsically disordered proteins, including their role in crucial functional processes such as transcription regulation.

In drug discovery, his collaboration with Dr. Doemling has revolutionized drug development through the introduction of interactive structure-based drug technologies that facilitate the screening of millions of novel compounds in seconds. Dr. Camacho holds multiple patents for first-in-class drugs and therapies—ranging from structure-based discoveries to ones developed with limited structural information—spanning across various medical indications.

Most recently, Dr. Camacho's lab is developing advanced technologies that harness omics data to predict drug-target interactions. This approach aims to offer a comprehensive strategy for targeting any protein within the human genome, including challenging targets like transcription factors.
