Marián Hajdúch: Support for science is actually declining. It pains me to have to turn away talented people

Every government invokes the need to invest in science. This topic is present in every policy statement. However, there is a huge gap between the support that is declared and the support that is actually provided. Marián Hajdúch, Medical Director of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Director of the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine at Palacký University, knows this all too well.

“Despite all the difficulties, the Czech biomedical research infrastructure is very efficient – with relatively little funding it is able to produce results that stand up well in international comparison.” says Marián Hajdúch. He also discusses what follows from the complete sequencing of the genomes of several thousand Czechs and how cancer screening programmes should be modified.
